Guilty as Charged, Part 6

Every year, the titles get more generic and the plots do too!  Are there any bright spots? (for past years, see my 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2009 reviews).

Once Upon a Holiday

Plot: A small-country princess (aren't they all?) escapes from her royal life for a few days, aided by a handsome stranger who has no idea who she is. Think Roman Holiday but starring the chick from Step Up 2 the Streets.
Lovable Old Person: No one famous.
Overacting: 2/5. Not too bad!
My guilt level: 3/5. Hallmark has a weakness for royalty-themed holiday movies lately, and I have a weakness for watching them.
Handsomeness of male lead: 4/5. He's the lovable goofball from Window Wonderland.
Overall: 3.5/5. This is pretty cute!

'Tis the Season for Love
Plot: a struggling actress comes home for the holidays to find her ex-boyfriend married with kids and his fire chief brother...conveniently unattached.  Would things have been different if she had never gone to New York? Can the charms of hometown life make her give up her acting dreams?
Lovable Old Person: Not present.
Overacting: 2/5.
My guilt level: 2/5
Handsomeness of male lead: 3/5, but my "gaydar" was going off throughout his performance.
Overall: 3.5/5.  A cute ending and a pretty cute movie!

A Gift-Wrapped Christmas
Plot: a personal shopper gets a crabby new client for Christmas - a handsome widowed workaholic with an adorable son.  See where we're going with this?
Lovable Old Person: Not present.  But that kid might be the most adorable kid since Love Actually. And that's saying something.
Overacting: 1/5.  The lead actress does a great job, and it has some of the most relatable family scenes of the bunch.
My guilt level: 1/5.
Handsomeness of male lead: 3/5.  He's a little wooden, but once they get him out of a suit and into jeans and a sweater...swoon.
Overall: 5/5! This is the holiday movie that shows other holiday movies how it's done.

The Christmas Gift
Plot: Not to be confused with A Gift-Wrapped Christmas or the 12 Gifts of Christmas, in The Christmas Gift Michelle Trachtenberg struggles to crack a smile as a journalist looking for her big break into serious stories.  How? By stalking profiling the founder of a children's charity...who also happens to have sent her an inspiring Christmas gift when she was a kid. An unnecessary side plot about her aunt being kicked out of her apartment complex to make room for a fancy new condo development.
Lovable Old Person: NBA player Rick Fox plays the boss.
Overacting: 3/5.  There's a smarmy ex boyfriend who lays it on pretty thick. Also, Rick Fox.
My guilt level: 2/5.
Handsomeness of male lead: 2/5. Not super cute at first but has a nice smile.
Overall: 1/5. The outlook for this movie is as drab at Michelle Trachtenberg's wardrobe. Seriously, it was bad.

The 12 Gifts of Christmas
Plot: The woman from last year's Snow Bride is back as some sort of shopping savant who helps a handsome beefcake get ready for Christmas.
Lovable Old Person: She's not super lovable but Donna Mills plays the beefcake's mother.
Handsomeness of male lead: 4/5. He's cute alright.
My guilt level: 0/5 because I didn't stick around long enough to find out.
Overacting: 5/5 because you know who has a major role in this film?  The chick from the Megaplex pre-show features. Yes, her:
This movie also features City Creek masquerading as a New York City mall. You can't fool me, Hallmark.

A Christmas Detour

Plot: Candace Cameron Bure is a high-strung magazine writer stranded on her way to meet her stuffy fiance and his stuffy family.  But when her only hope to arrive rests with her handsome seatmate on the plane, who knows what could happen?  You know what, actually everyone knows what could happen.
Lovable Old Person: Not present.
Overacting: 3/5. Candace Cameron Bure is not the best actress.
My guilt level: 2/5.
Handsomeness of male lead: 3/5. Sometimes he's cute and sometimes he looks old! Mostly he's cute though.
Overall: 3/5.

Last Flight to Christmas

Plot: Mayim Blalik is horribly miscast as a contemporary woman whose fiance has just broken up with her.  Flying home to lick her wounds, she is stranded in a storm with a handsome stranger. We'll set aside the fact that Mayim Blalik is Jewish, starring in a Christmas movie.
Lovable Old Person: Not present.
Overacting: 2.5/5. Not much overacting per se, but the two leads have exactly zero chemistry.
My guilt level: 3/5.
Handsomeness of male lead: 4/5. Those glasses don't hide the fact that he's incredibly good-looking. You know who Mayim Blalik actually married?  Someone who looks like this:

Overall: 1/5.

Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors

Plot: Not exactly a Christmas movie - but I think it mentions Christmas?  Anyway, this is the story of Dolly Parton's growing up in a tiny cabin with 12 kids in the mountains of Tennessee.  Ricky Shroder (welcome back!) plays her dad, who is struggling to find God in the midst of tragedy, and Jennifer Nettles plays his long-suffering wife.
Lovable Old Person: Gerald McRaney of Major Dad fame.
Overacting: 1/5. This is really well-acted.
My guilt level: 1/5.  Not guilty about this one at all!
Handsomeness of male lead: 3/5. If we're counting Ricky Shroder as the male lead, there were a few times when I found myself thinking he looks good in those overalls.
Overall: 5/5.  I really liked this one!!  I loved how it dealt with issues every family can relate to and doesn't shy away from religion.  Also, Dolly Parton!

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas
Plot: In perhaps the creepiest plotline of them all, a woman's college friend moves back in town and he HATES CHRISTMAS all of a sudden.  So she arranges to have 12 gifts sent to him once per day to help him recapture the spirit, then doesn't tell him it's her and writes an article / expose about him!
Lovable Old Person: Not present.
Overacting: 3/5.
My guilt level: 3/5.
Handsomeness of male lead: 1/5. Not cute at all.
Overall: 2/5.  Oof.  This is a rough one.

Christmas Incorporated

Plot: The rebellious (he drives a motorcycle) heir of a toy company visits a small town prior to closing the factory and putting them all out of business.  UNLESS a pretty new employee can convince him how much the town needs the company!  If only she hadn't lied in order to get the job in a plot line clearly manufactured to create conflict!
Lovable Old Person: Not present.
Overacting: 2/5.
My guilt level: 2/5.  Mostly related to the tie he's wearing in this picture.
Handsomeness of male lead: 5/5.  I mean look at him in this flannel.

Overall: 3/5.

Just in Time For Christmas

Plot: a young professor has to choose between a lucrative job offer and getting married (because they're mutually exclusive).  When she accepts a carriage ride from a stranger (note: never accept a carriage ride from a stranger), she is transformed 3 years into the future to see how her choices turn out.
Lovable Old Person: Two!! William Shatner plays the strange carriage driver and Christopher Lloyd really elevates the acting in the movie as her cute grandfather.
Overacting: 1/5.  This is well-acted.
My guilt level: 3/5 for the time travel plot alone.
Handsomeness of male lead: 4/5.  He's got just the right amount of scruff and floppy hair.
Overall: 4/5.  This was a pleasant surprise, after a dubious first 30 minutes.  Stay with it - this is a cute one.

Phew!!!  What did you think of the holiday crop this year?

Guilty as Charged, Part 5

It's everybody's my favorite time of year again: time to celebrate holiday made-for-TV movies.  I watched the good, bad, and ugly of 2014's crop (and I can assure you there were some of each). You can read my 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2009 reviews.

The 9 Lives of Christmas

Plot: Brandon Routh (Superman!) and the lesbian sister from last year's A Bride for Christmas play it straight, as a fireman who doesn't believe in true love and a future veterinarian who does. Will a down-to-earth cat lover finally get this bachelor to settle down?
Lovable old person: I am counting Gregory Harrison (of Ed fame! He was Nick!) as an older fireman/mentor.
Overacting: 1/5.  This is well-acted, and I especially liked Kimberly Susted as the lead.
My Guilt Level: 2/5 for the cat theme alone.  However, I will say, the cats are not prominent.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 5/5.  He was freaking Superman for starters; and the opening scene has him yielding an ax in a tank top.  You can't say the Hallmark Channel doesn't give the people what they want.
Overall: 4.5/5.  This was a pleasant surprise!  It could be my favorite of the season.

A Cookie Cutter Christmas

Plot: In what could quite possibly be the worst-titled movie of the year, and that's saying something, two teachers and frenemies try to out-do each other in everything.  When a handsome widower moves into town, it seems the only way to win his heart is....to win the school's baking contest.*
*actual plot point
Lovable old person: no one famous.
Overacting: 3/5.
My Guilt Level: 3/5.  I knew this one would be bad....and I watched it anyway.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 3/5.  I mean, he's handsome and all, but kind of bland. Kind of like this movie.
Overall: 2/5.

Christmas on the Bayou

Ugh, Mom, why are you still flirting with him??

Plot: A NYC workaholic single mom (aren't they all?) comes home to Loos-iana to spend Christmas with her mother - and hopefully help her little son make some friends. But she finds more than she bargains for when her schoolgirl crush is still in town, and he's lookin' good.
Lovable old person: How to choose?  Is it Markie Post of Nightcourt fame as the mother?  Country legend Randy Travis as a generous shopkeeper?  Or Ed Asner and his unsteady Southern accent as Papa Noel? (that's Santee Claus to those of us up north)
Overacting: 2/5.  It's actually not too bad!
My Guilt Level: 2/5.  I pretty much knew what I was getting into here when I decided to watch a movie called "Christmas on the Bayou."
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 4/5.  He's a bearded Southern charmer who simply won't give up on his girl no matter how often she pushes him away. Seriously, stop pushing him away!
Overall: 3/5. It has a cute ending and some of the more believable acting in the crop.

En Vogue Christmas

Plot: A successful music mogul tries to save the club her dad founded by holding a benefit concert with the only people who can save it....90s girl group En Vogue. Obviously.
Lovable old person: David Alan Grier, who is 58...and looking creepy.

Overacting: 3/5.  I expected worse. Two of the three ladies of En Vogue are actually not too bad.
My Guilt Level: 5/5. 4 points for the movie, and 1 point for the fact that I downloaded a song from the movie on iTunes.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: n/a.  This one's about girl power, y'all.
Overall: 2/5. I mean, it wasn't terrible. I recommend watching the first 15 minutes to get a flavor, then skip to an hour in.  You'll catch on just fine.

Angels and Ornaments

Don't be fooled....no drums are actually played, and nothing exciting happens in this movie.

Plot: Will Schuster's crazy ex wife in Glee tries to play it lovable as a music store employee who needs the help of an angel to break free from her ex husband (boyfriend? oh, it doesn't even matter).  Will she fall in love with her boss, who's been pining for her for years? Also, it's worth mentioning that the angel is actually her dead grandpa!
Lovable old person: non-existent.
Overacting: 3/5. I was immediately bothered by the leading lady's whispery delivery.  Try to watch a whole movie of that and see if you don't go crazy.
My Guilt Level: 2/5.  Plot-wise, this is pretty standard issue Hallmark material. I just wish it was better executed.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 2/5.  Points deducted for the way he pines helplessly for our lady.  He even has to endure a dressing room montage in which HE'S the one trying on clothes, all so he can appear more appealing to our leading lady (cuz music store employees LOVE guys in suits).  Turn in your man card immediately, sir!
Overall: 2/5. Totally forgettable, and that title's not helping any.

A Royal Christmas

This is the only time you'll find Jane Seymour smiling in this movie.

Plot: Lacey Chabert, fresh off 2013's Matchmaker Santa, now plays a seamstress/aspiring clothing designer who learns her boyfriend is a prince. Trouble ensues when he brings her home to Queen mama and she's none too pleased by the uncouth American. Plot points borrowed liberally from the Princess Diaries and The Prince and Me.

Lovable old person: Jane Seymour, not so lovable as the queen. Don't worry, though, she has a sudden turn-about in the last five minutes.
Overacting: 4/5. After seeing this second movie with Lacey Chabert, I have decided that if Lacey Chabert is not playing Gretchen Weiners, I'm not interested.  She's a bit like a little mouse - she's so much shorter than everyone else on screen, and delivers her lines in a little baby voice that just kind of grates.
My Guilt Level: 3/5.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 4/5.  One point deducted for the face that he's playing a prince in France, and has a British accent.  I mean, I love me a British accent, but...
Overall: 2/5. Meh.  I was bugged that the movie starts with the two leads already together.  Not only do we miss the meet-cute(!), but they don't have much chemistry together.  You really do wonder why they're together.

One Starry Christmas

Plot: Budding astronomer Holly is bummed when her boyfriend chooses to go to New York for a work conference rather than spend Christmas with her. Not to be swayed, she gets on a bus to follow him.  But along the way, she meets a handsome cowboy who could make her re-think her choices.
Lovable old person: No one famous.
Overacting: 2/5. I think my only beef with the acting is our cowboy's accent, which I can only describe as half-Texas, half-Jersey. I was incredibly distracted every time he said the word "stahhs" ("stars").  Good thing this movie's not about a budding young astronomer and stars are not a major plot point.  Wait, it is?  Ah, crap.
My Guilt Level: 1/5.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 4/5.  See above comment regarding accent.
Overall:  4/5. A pleasant surprise!

Christmas at Cartwright's

Plot : Last year's "star of Christmas" Alicia Witt is in only one movie this Christmas, and she's chosen terribly.  She plays an out-of-work single mother who is turned down for a job at a classy department store, and winds up...as the department store Santa. Poor Alicia Witt not only has to dress up as Santa but has to talk in a deep voice to fool others into thinking she's a man.  Surprises are in store when she discovers she has a magic ability to grant children's wishes for Christmas courtesy of an angel claiming to be a corporate consultant.  And yes...it really is as bad as it sounds.
Lovable old person: Wallace Shawn ("Inconceivable!") plays the magic corporate consultant.
Overacting: 4/5. If Alicia Witt's man-voice weren't enough, her department sidekick is an over-eager lady elf.
My Guilt Level: 5/5.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 2/5.  Big bland suit.
Overall:  1/5. I would say this is the worst of the crop...but it gets worse.

The Best Christmas Party Ever

Plot : A party planner works against the odds to plan....[and this is where I fell asleep]

The Christmas Parade

I mean, look at that skirt.  Do you sympathize with this woman?
Plot : 90210's AnnaLynne McCord plays a TV gossip journalist who learns her boyfriend? fiance? is engaged to someone else while doing a segment on national TV.  Humiliated, she gets in her car and promptly crashes it in a small town, where she must stay and do community service.  Conveniently, there is a parade display that needs a-making, and a handsome innkeeper who needs to go a-wooing.  I would also be remiss if I failed to mention that Drew Scott, of HGTV's Property Brothers, plays the skeezy boyfriend/fiance.
Lovable old person: Wendy Williams as the town pastor.  Yep, that's exactly who I would've cast, too.
Overacting: 3/5.
My Guilt Level: 3/5.
Handsomeness of Male Lead: 4/5.  He's cute, gals.  If you're wondering where you've seen him before, he had a minor role in that new Christmas classic, the 12 Men of Christmas.
Overall: 2/5. My entire opinion of this movie is wrapped around my hatred of AnnaLynne McCord's character.  Hallmark Christmas movies are supposed to revolve around the girl next door or the obsessive career woman or the lonely young single mother, not the bratty popular girl who got all the guys in high school.  She's not sympathetic even when she has her turn-around.

Still with me?? Tell me what YOU think about this year's crop.

Kristen's Birthday

On Kristen's actual birthday, we celebrated with a delicious dinner at Benihana.  So good!

Then, on Sunday, we celebrated with the whole family at Dad's house.

In lieu of a cake, Kristen always requests homemade chocolate chip cookies.  Davis and Jena were excited to help her blow out the candles.

Davis and Jena are just fun to watch.  They cracked me up eating their treat - and then licking their plates.

Jena likes to dress up as a celebrity

 An aunt sandwich

 We love Kristen!
